Jornal da SBTOX – Sociedade Brasileira de Toxicologia
Oficial Journal of the Brazilian Society of Toxicology

The journal APPLIED RESEARCH IN TOXICOLOGY, is replacing the former Brazilian Journal of Toxicology (Revista Brasileira de Toxicologia), and has the characteristics to be a specialized periodical, peer reviewed and widely distributed in Brazil and other countries, on a quarterly basis.

It publishes original research of basic or applied Toxicology, which contribute to the knowledge and development of toxicology and related sciences. It is edited by the Brazilian Society of Toxicology – SBTOX with the participation of theBrazilian Society of Environmental Mutagenesis, Carcinogenesis and Teratogenesis (SBMCTA – www.sbmcta.org.br) and the Brazilian Association of Toxicological Assistence and Information Centres (ABRACIT – www.abracit.org.br).

ART is a journal open access to the international scientific community, and accepts contributions in the form of original articles, short communications and critical review articles. It also accepts good quality case reports from different regions of the world.

Over the last 25 years, Regulatory Agencies have been active on improving methodologies and data generation to assess the exposure of rural workers to pesticides. Currently, the most used approach to evaluate their safety is the Occupational Risk Assessment. In Brazil, the risk assessment was cited in Decree No. 4,074/2002, Art. 95, item III, which regulates Law No. 7,802/1989. When considering the agricultural scenarios, it is known that workers can be exposed by the dermal and inhalation routes. In order to evaluate the different agricultural scenarios, several studies were carried out to monitor worker exposure and their results are used to comprise a generic database. These data allow to extrapolate the exposure unit to other agrochemicals where the same activity is performed (Popendorf et al., 1980 and 1982, Zweig et al 1984 & 1985). The aim of this work was to develop a tool, called the OPEX Calculator – Support Tool for Occupational Risk Assessment that gathers information of generic data of worker exposure when handling pesticides. This calculator will provide support for the evaluation of the occupational risk, as it will allow estimating the exposure of individuals who handle agrochemicals on the field using different application equipment”. The calculator provides generic data – inhalation and dermal exposure unit – for different scenarios of occupational exposure that can be assessed. It is a tool that allows the selection of specific data related to the conditions of use of the product and the scenario under evaluation, such as: the amount of active ingredient (AI) handled, the size of the treated area, selection of the agricultural crop, specific toxicological data of the active ingredient/product under consideration as well as the personal protective equipment (PPE) that should be recommended to ensure the safety of the worker. With a generic database and the insertion of specific usage parameters in the calculator it is possible to assess the occupational risk for the selected scenario. The result is expressed as a percentage of the Acceptable Operator Exposure Level (AOEL).
